HoliSoils

The synergy between SOILL and the EU-funded HoliSoils project is reflected in HoliSoils' contribution to the SOILL-Startup Thematic Engagement Event "Protecting and Enhancing Forest Soil Health: Tools for Forest Advisors", held in Kaunas (Lithuania) on 1 October 2025. The project improved understanding of how forest soils support biodiversity, carbon storage, and climate regulation across Europe.

HoliSoils developed harmonised methods to monitor soil health and generated new data on soil organisms and processes across different forest types. It also identified climate-smart forest management practices, such as mixed stands, moderate thinning, and continuous-cover forestry, to enhance soil resilience and ecosystem services, addressing challenges including degraded peatlands, soil acidification, and fire-affected areas.

The project contributed tools, datasets, and knowledge to support better modelling, policymaking, and sustainable forest management in the face of climate change, including inputs to European soil monitoring frameworks and global biodiversity databases.
