FOR MISSION SOIL LIVING LABS & LIGHTHOUSES

Support services for your Living Lab or Lighthouse

SOILL is funded under the Horizon Europe Mission “A Soil Deal for Europe” (Mission Soil), which aims to establish a network of 100 Soil Health Living Labs (LLs) and Lighthouses (LHs) leading the transition towards healthy soils by 2030. SOILL coordinates, supports, expands and promotes this network. This page shows what SOILL offers to Soil Living Labs and Lighthouses, when each service applies and what you need to do.

Four actions to take first

If you do nothing else on this page, do these four things. Everything else is an opportunity you can
take up when it suits your Living Lab.

  1. Register on the SOILL Hub

Your LL/LH profile is pre-created by SOILL. You and your colleagues register as users at soill2030.app/signin. Step-by-step guide: soill2030.eu/soillhub

  2. Complete the SOILL onboarding survey

Your answers determine the training and support you are offered, and they populate your profile in the Living Labs and Lighthouses Atlas and Catalogue.

  3. Put the M&E deadline in your calendar

The assessment is mandatory and annual, with data submission in quarter 1. Only the Administrator can access it. Start with the M&E training recording and the M&E Guidelines.

  4. Subscribe and join a Working Group

Newsletter: soill2030.eu/newsletters. Working Groups are open on the Hub under Groups › Official SOILL Groups, if you would like to contribute.

Three services to know first

Everything else builds on these

  • The SOILL Hub

The central digital platform of the community, free of charge upon registration: your profile page, the M&E section, the Interactive Atlas and Learning Journey, the events calendar, thematic Groups, the knowledge repository, the Helpdesk and IT support.

  • SOILL Learning Journey

Understand what learning you need at each step of your journey, gain access to useful resources, and take part in trainings and bootcamps.

  • Monitoring & Evaluation

Receive an individual report with recommendations, track your progress and assess your contribution to the Mission Soil objectives. Mandatory, annual, fully online on the Hub.

Your journey with SOILL, phase by phase

Three phases, from joining the network to support after your project ends. Select the phase fitting your Living Lab or Lighthouse and scroll through the services. Each service says what you get and what you need to do.

Phase 1 — Onboarding

From the GAP phase to the first months

The onboarding phase is where SOILL establishes contact with your project and gathers the
information needed to integrate your LL/LH into the network. What you provide here determines the
support you receive later.

Exchange with project coordinators

What it is

An initial meeting during the Grant Agreement Preparation phase or shortly after launch, often facilitated by REA and the European Commission.

What you get

  • A clear view of the support, tools and services available
  • Clarified roles and expectations between SOILL and your project
  • Early identification of your needs, so support can be tailored from the outset
  • A direct contact point in the SOILL team

What you do

Nothing — SOILL contacts your coordinator.

Consortium and data mapping

What it is

SOILL collects contacts and key information about your project: coordinators and partner organisations, LL managers and communication contacts, land-use types and biogeographic regions, and alignment with the Mission Soil objectives.

What you get

Inclusion in the right mailing lists, access to the services relevant to your profile, and connections to peers working on similar themes.

What you do

Coordinators share this information in the template provided, and keep it updated — tell SOILL whenever contacts change or new people join.

SOILL onboarding survey

What it is

A more detailed survey covering your activities and thematic focus, your operational needs and support priorities, and your stakeholder engagement and collaboration interests.

What you get

What you do

Complete the survey once, as early as possible.

SOILL at your kick-off meeting

What it is

On invitation, SOILL joins the kick-off meeting of your project.

What you get

  • An overview of the SOILL framework and services for the whole consortium
  • An introduction to the SOILL Hub and the monitoring process
  • Answers to your first questions, and early contact with the SOILL team

What you do

Invite SOILL when you plan your kick-off agenda.

Phase 2 — Project implementation

Throughout the lifetime of your project

Once your project is running, SOILL accompanies you in three ways: day-to-day support and communication, the annual Monitoring & Evaluation cycle, and the learning, visibility and collaboration opportunities that are open all year.

Support during implementation Continuous

These are the channels through which you will hear about opportunities, and the fastest ways to get help.

Mailing lists and direct contact

What it is

Dedicated mailing lists for LL managers and for LL project coordinators.

What you get

  • Updates on SOILL activities and services
  • Invitations to training sessions and events
  • Opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange

What you do

Make sure the right colleagues are on the lists, and write directly whenever you need something.

Quarterly catch-up meetings

What it is

Briefs, newsletter and helpdesks

What you get

  • SOILL Briefs — a consolidated overview of upcoming activities, key opportunities and recent developments across the network
  • Newsletter — new events and announcements: soill2030.eu/newsletters
  • SOILL Helpdesk and FAQ — direct assistance on Living Lab methodologies, soil-related themes, SOILL services and cross-cutting innovation topics
  • SOILL IT Help Centre — technical support on user profiles, navigating the Hub, accessing the monitoring tools and troubleshooting

What you do

Subscribe to the newsletter; the Briefs reach you through the mailing lists.

Monitoring & Evaluation Annual · Submission in Q1 · Mandatory

The SOILL Monitoring & Evaluation framework helps you track your progress and assess your contribution to the Mission Soil objectives. It follows a “Monitor – Evaluate – Learn” approach.

What the framework gives you

What you get

  • A structured way to monitor progress towards soil health objectives
  • An evaluation of your operational performance and impact
  • Identification of opportunities for improvement and learning
  • A contribution to the collective monitoring of Mission Soil

How the assessment works

What you do

  • Make sure your LL/LH Administrator has been appointed — the M&E section of your profile is restricted to Admins only
  • Complete the structured self-assessment questionnaire and the qualitative questionnaire
  • Submit on the Hub by the quarter 1 deadline

Learning, visibility and collaboration Open all year

This is where you build capacity, become visible to the rest of the Mission Soil community, and work with peers facing the same questions.

SOILL Learning Journey trainings

What it is

A tailored and interactive learning journey, designed by stages and informed by the needs you declare. It includes dedicated resources — training content and guides on Living Lab set-up, governance, monitoring and impact, and more.

What you get

Online trainings and bootcamps are designed from the Learning Journey and announced in advance through the mailing lists. Recordings and materials are added to the Hub systematically.

SOILL Working Groups

What it is

Three thematic groups, launched on 4 March 2026: LL Foundation and Governance, Soil Biodiversity, and Stakeholder Engagement in the LLs.

How to join

  • Register on the SOILL Hub, if you have not already
  • Go to Groups › Official SOILL Groups and select the group you are interested in
  • Give the name of your Living Lab and project in the “Reason” field
  • An administrator approves your request within 2–3 working days

Your profile page and the Interactive Atlas

What you get

A dedicated profile page on the Hub with your geographic location, thematic focus areas, partners and stakeholders, and a description of your activities and objectives. All profiles are compiled in the Interactive Living Lab Atlas and published in the Living Labs catalogue.

What you do

Once Admin rights are assigned, keep your profile page up to date — it is how other LLs, LHs and stakeholders find you.

Events where you can present your work

What it is

SOILL-branded events — the Annual Engagement Event, the Bootcamp, mutual visits, engagement events for applicants and webinars — where LL and LH representatives can show their work. Relevant third-party events, such as OpenLivingLab Days, where SOILL can help you stand out and showcase your impact and good practices.

What you do

Watch the events calendar and tell the SOILL team what you would like to present.
