The SOILL Living Labs & Lighthouses network is open to existing and emerging initiatives working to improve soil health in agricultural, forestry, urban, industrial, natural and semi-natural environments.

We are looking for initiatives that already operate as, or have the potential to develop into, a Soil Health Living Lab or Lighthouse in line with the concepts established by the EU Mission “A Soil Deal for Europe”.

Mission Soil

What are...

Soil Health Living Labs

Soil Health Living Labs are user-centred, place-based and transdisciplinary research and innovation ecosystems, which involve land managers, scientists and other relevant partners in systemic research and the co-design, testing, monitoring and evaluation of solutions in real-life settings, to improve their effectiveness for soil health and accelerate adoption.

These Living Labs are collaborations between multiple partners that operate at regional or sub-regional level and coordinate experiments on several sites (10–20) within a regional or sub-regional area (or working landscape).

Soil Health Lighthouses

Soil Health Lighthouses are places for demonstration of solutions, training and communication that are exemplary in their performance in terms of soil health improvement.

They are local sites (one farm, one forest exploitation, one industrial site, one urban city green area, etc.) that can be included in a Living Lab area or be situated outside a Living Lab area.

You do not need to be fully aligned yet

Your initiative does not need to meet all the Mission Soil criteria when starting the process. SOILL also welcomes initiatives that are still developing towards them. Depending on its level of alignment, your initiative may be recognised as:

  • European Soil Living Lab or Lighthouse - if it is fully aligned with the Mission Soil criteria but is not funded through the dedicated Mission Soil Living Lab topics.
  • Emerging Soil Living Lab or Lighthouse - if it has relevant characteristics and ambitions but is still working towards full alignment with the Mission Soil criteria.

Not sure whether your initiative fits? You can still start the registration process, check the dedicated FAQ, or contact the SOILL Helpdesk for guidance. Please note that you need to be logged in to the SOILL Hub first.

Participation in training, events, working groups, peer-learning activities, networking and other opportunities is voluntary and can be tailored to your interests, needs and available capacity.

Joining the SOILL Living Labs & Lighthouses network is free of charge, with no membership fee. SOILL services, including the SOILL Hub, Helpdesk, resources and online community activities, are also provided free of charge for the duration of SOILL (until 2030).

There are, however, a few core commitments to remain part of the network:

  • keep the information about your initiative and its SOILL Hub profile accurate and up to date;
  • inform SOILL of significant changes affecting your initiative.

Your organisation is responsible for the time and resources it dedicates to these commitments and any other activities it chooses to join.

Any costs associated with specific optional activities, such as travel or participation in external events, will be communicated in advance. Where possible, SOILL may provide financial support to facilitate participation in selected in-person activities.

Joining the SOILL Living Labs & Lighthouses network gives you more than recognition.
