Map of European and Emerging Soil Living Labs

Explore the European and Emerging Soil Living Labs and Lighthouses advancing Soil Health in Europe

The interactive map is a dynamic and evolving tool that showcases initiatives working toward healthy soils across Europe to support the EU Mission “A Soil Deal for Europe”

It offers a clear and structured overview of the European and Emerging Soil Living Labs and Lighthouses. []

It serves as a key tool to visualise, connect, and strengthen the ecosystem of Living Labs (LLs), Lighthouses (LHs) and Experimental Sites (ES) across Europe. It serves as a key tool for:

  • Mapping current and emerging soil health initiatives
  • Facilitating knowledge exchange and collaboration
  • Supporting networking and consortia formation

Disclaimer

This map includes European/Emerging Soil Living Labs which are not funded by the European Commission under the framework of the Mission "A Soil Deal for Europe". The European Soil Living Labs are fully aligned to the Mission Soil criteria but do not receive direct funding from the dedicated Mission Soil topics. The Emerging Soil Living Labs are potential living labs including on-the-ground experiments that have not yet fully aligned to the Mission Soil criteria.

You can view the First Wave of Mission Soil Living Labs on the SOILL Hub Atlas. These Living Labs are established through Horizon Europe Mission Soil Projects funded by the European Union. If it is your first time on the Hub, you can sign up here

Understanding the Map's Structure and Classification

Originally developed under the PREPSOIL project, this map follows a structured system where each site listed on the map is categorised ensuring clarity, consistency, and alignment with the Mission Soil Implementation Plan

These filtering categories were developed under PREPSOIL, in close coordination with the Mission Secretariat and the European Research Executive Agency. They reflect the operational criteria set by the Mission Soil framework and are designed to support better documenting and stakeholder engagement across Europe.

You can explore and filter initiatives by:

  • Type of Initiative: Living Lab (LL), Lighthouse (LH), and Experimentation Site (ES).
  • Land-Use Type: The initiatives span across diverse land-use contexts, namely, Agriculture, Forestry, Urban, Industrial, Natural & Semi-Natural.
  • Status: Considering the alignment to Mission Soil objectives, their adherence to the PREPSOIL Taxonomy, and their stages of development, the LLs and LHs in the Mission Soil context can be classified along a three-level scale:
three cards on Mission Soil Living Labs, European Soil Living Labs and Emerging Living Labs
Status of Living Labs Dedicated to Soil Health. All listed Living Labs focus on soil health and are classified into three categories: Mission Soil Living Labs, European Soil Living Labs, and Emerging Living Labs.
